Well it's raining again in Southern California, and while I know that we have been in drought conditions for an extended length of time and we really need the rain (if only to fill Lake Sonoma!), it still gives me a little cabin fever! So as the raindrops hammer against the window pane I will take some time to write this blog and long for spring time adventures and new experiences up on the vineyard, where the rain is very welcome!
I have mentioned some of the exciting things to do in Healdsburg, both dining and shopping, but imagine my surprise to discover that Cloverdale was pronounced one of the "21 Coolest Small Towns in America" by
Budget Travel Magazine!
The editors were looking for towns with a population of 10,000 people or less that are beginning to draw attention for their quality of life, arts and nature. You could even call Cloverdale a town with an edge!

I have long been a fan of its 'Friday Night Live' concert series that attracts large crowds all through the summer with live Folk, Jazz and World music, and we love seeing the unique sculptures around town which are placed by the eclectic art gallery! The restaurants are great; there's the local sandwich shop (Eagles Nest Deli and Grill), an authentic northern Italian family run restaurant (Piacere), a family run Mexican taqueria (La Hacienda) an Irish Pub (Ruth McGowan's Brewpub), and maybe the best ever hamburger joint (
The World Famous Hamburger Ranch). And of course all of this is in the midst of the Alexander Valley Appellation where you can plan a visit to wineries such as the historic Asti (home of Cellar No. 8), Silver Oak, or Dutcher Crossing. One of my favorite wineries in the area, just 5 minutes from Cloverdale, is the
Fritz Winery whose beautiful setting is one of our favorite picnic spots...here is a gli

mpse into their wines:
2007 Chardonnay Russian River ValleyThis smooth Chard is sourced from seven vineyards throughout the Russian River...lemon, straw and almond flavors! ($25)
2007 Russian River Valley Pinot NoirGreat expression of blackberries, and dried cranberries...a hint of vanilla! ($35)
