Smoke Taint A Worry?

This past summer we were visiting with family in Healdsburg at the height of the wild fires. It was a very depressing time as we were showing some first time visitors around and the smoke was so thick that you could barely see the hills. By the fourth day it finally cleared up and I never thought what effect the smoke might have on the grapes. Although the wildfire did not damage any wineries or vineyards now that the grapes have been harvested winemakers have been trying to determine if any smoke compounds might be lingering in the juice. Many articles have been written addressing this issue and say that some winemakers have already detected the signs of smokiness in their juice. The smoke may even be a distinguishing factor to the 2008 vintage! I'm reading that many winemakers will be taking extra steps to offset any possible effect of the smoke on their wines. One step might be to limit the amount of contact the skins have with the juice. Winemakers will probably not know how the smoke might have effected the wine till bottling. I guess this gives new meaning to the term 'Toasted Oak'!

In keeping with my "winemadeez" theme, and in light of the current economic situation I thought I should recommend some Affordable Pours:

Estancia 2005 Reserve Meritage - Paso Robles
This is a sophisticated, rich and complex wine harvested from the acclaimed appellation of Paso Robles. The 2005 growing season was a favorable mix of both cool and warm spells. This excellent weather pattern allowed for extended vine time for the fruit and makes for deep concentrated flavors! Intense black cherry with hints of rosemary and anise and a touch of chocolate. The composition is 56% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot and 3% Malbec. $35.00

Newton Vineyard 2006 Red Lable Chardonnay
This brilliant Chardonnay sources grapes from Napa, Sonoma and the Coastal vineyards which showcase the purity of the fruit. This Chardonnay is a perfect everyday wine with delicate aromas of flowers, apple and toasted nuts. Citrus and pear shine through with a subtle oak finish. This wine pairs well with classic seafood dishes and with heart warming creamy dishes!
$25.00

Kenefick Ranch 2004 Cabernet Sauvignon
This 2004 Cabernet comes from a combination of rocky hillside blocks and well drained soils closer to the valley floor. The result is complex layers of rich texture and ripe fruits! The nose is a matrix of wild blackberry, licorice, and vanilla bean. The fruit is 100% estate grown...87% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Merlot, 1.8% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot. The juice spent 18 months in new French oak.
$60.00
